  • Understanding Matter: A Guide to Solids, Liquids, Gases & Plasma
There are many ways to classify matter, but here are four common types:

    1. Solids: Have a definite shape and volume. Their particles are closely packed and vibrate in fixed positions. Examples: rock, ice, metal.

    2. Liquids: Have a definite volume but take the shape of their container. Their particles are close together but can move around. Examples: water, oil, mercury.

    3. Gases: Have no definite shape or volume. Their particles are far apart and move freely. Examples: air, oxygen, helium.

    4. Plasma: A superheated matter where electrons are stripped from atoms, creating an electrically conductive fluid. Examples: lightning, the sun, fluorescent light bulbs.
