  • Food Webs vs. Food Chains: Understanding Ecosystem Connections
Interconnected food chains are called food webs.

A food web is a complex network of interconnected food chains within an ecosystem. It shows the flow of energy and nutrients through different organisms and their interactions.

Here's why it's important to understand the difference:

    * Food chain: A linear sequence of organisms where each organism eats the one before it. For example, grass -> grasshopper -> frog -> snake.

    * Food web: A more realistic representation of how organisms are connected in an ecosystem, showing multiple food chains interconnected. For example, a food web would show that the grasshopper might also be eaten by a spider, or the frog might also eat insects other than grasshoppers.

Food webs are more complex and accurately represent the intricate relationships within an ecosystem.
