During interphase, the cell is actively carrying out its normal functions:
* Growth: The cell increases in size and produces new organelles and proteins.
* Metabolic Activity: The cell performs all the essential metabolic processes like respiration, protein synthesis, and energy production.
* DNA Replication: The cell copies its entire DNA genome in preparation for cell division.
* Preparation for Mitosis: The cell prepares the necessary components for cell division, like microtubules and spindle fibers.
While cell division (mitosis or meiosis) is an important part of the cell cycle, it is a relatively short process compared to the length of interphase.
Therefore, interphase is the longest and most active phase in the life of a cell.
