  • Bony Fish in Sport Fishing: Predators, Not Omnivores
Bony fish are not generally considered omnivores in the sport of fishing.

    Here's why:

    * The term "omnivore" is defined by diet. An omnivore consumes both plants and animals. While some bony fish may occasionally nibble on algae or plant matter, their primary food source is animal-based.

    * Fishing focuses on prey species. The goal in sport fishing is usually to catch specific fish that are known to be predators or insectivores (like bass, trout, salmon, etc.).

    * Bait and lures are designed for animal-based diets. Fishermen use bait like worms, insects, or small fish to attract these predatory fish.

So, while there are some bony fish species that may have a mixed diet, the focus in sport fishing is on catching predatory fish, which are primarily carnivorous.
