    1. Chemotaxis: The granulocytes are attracted to the site of infection by chemical signals released by pathogens or injured cells.

    2. Adherence: The granulocyte adheres to the pathogen's surface using receptors on its cell membrane.

    3. Ingestion: The granulocyte engulfs the pathogen, forming a phagosome.

    4. Digestion: The phagosome fuses with lysosomes, which contain enzymes and other antimicrobial substances that break down the pathogen.

    Key Functions of Phagocytic Granulocytes:

    * Defense against infection: They act as the first line of defense against invading pathogens.

    * Inflammation: They contribute to inflammation by releasing inflammatory mediators.

    * Tissue repair: They help clear debris and promote tissue repair after an infection.

    * Immune regulation: They interact with other immune cells to modulate immune responses.
