More specifically, it's the chloroplasts within plant cells that perform this process. Chloroplasts contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight energy. This energy is then used to convert carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil into glucose (sugar) through a process called photosynthesis.
So, while plants are the whole organisms that perform photosynthesis, the actual conversion of sunlight to sugars happens within their chloroplasts.
