  • Penicillin Resistance in Bacteria: Asexual Reproduction & Genetic Inheritance
Certain bacteria produce a chemical that makes them resistant to penicillin. Since these reproduce asexually, they usually produce offspring that inherit the same resistance to penicillin.

    Here's why:

    * Asexual Reproduction: Bacteria reproduce asexually through binary fission. This means a single parent cell splits into two identical daughter cells.

    * Genetic Inheritance: The daughter cells inherit an exact copy of the parent cell's genetic material, including any genes that provide resistance to penicillin.

Therefore, if a bacterium has developed penicillin resistance, all its offspring will also be resistant. This is why antibiotic resistance can spread so rapidly in bacterial populations.
