  • Hormones & the Mouth: Understanding Saliva and Oral Glands
The mouth doesn't actually secrete hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers produced by glands that travel through the bloodstream to affect other cells and organs.

The mouth does contain glands that produce substances like:

    * Saliva: This is primarily produced by salivary glands and contains enzymes like amylase that begin the digestion of carbohydrates. It also helps with lubrication, speech, and oral hygiene.

    * Mucus: This is produced by the lining of the mouth and helps protect the tissue and keep it moist.

While these substances are important for oral health and function, they are not considered hormones.
