  • Human Chromosomes: Understanding Sperm & Egg Cell Numbers
A human sperm or egg cell contains 23 chromosomes.

This is called the haploid number (n), meaning they have half the number of chromosomes found in a normal body cell (somatic cell). Somatic cells have 46 chromosomes, or the diploid number (2n).

When a sperm and egg cell combine during fertilization, they create a zygote with 46 chromosomes (23 from each parent).
