    Herpes is caused by a virus.

    Specifically, it's caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two main types:

    * HSV-1 is typically associated with oral herpes (cold sores or fever blisters).

    * HSV-2 is typically associated with genital herpes.

    However, both types can infect both the mouth and genitals.
