  • Neutrophils: Your Body's Primary Defense Against Bacteria
The blood cells that kill bacteria are called neutrophils.

    Here's why:

    * Phagocytosis: Neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cell. They engulf and destroy bacteria through a process called phagocytosis. They essentially "eat" the bacteria.

    * Other mechanisms: They also release chemicals like enzymes and reactive oxygen species that can kill bacteria directly.

    * First responders: Neutrophils are often the first responders to infection sites, arriving quickly to fight off invading bacteria.

While other white blood cells like macrophages and lymphocytes also play a role in fighting bacteria, neutrophils are the primary cell type responsible for their direct destruction.
