  • Cells: The Fundamental Units of Life - Structure & Function
The basic unit of structure and function in an organism is called a cell.

    Here's why:

    * Structure: Cells are the smallest unit of life that can exist independently. They have a membrane that encloses them, and they contain various internal structures (organelles) that carry out specific functions.

    * Function: Cells perform all the necessary life processes, such as metabolism, growth, and reproduction. Different types of cells have specialized functions within an organism.

While there are smaller components within a cell, like molecules and organelles, they are not considered the basic unit of structure and function for the whole organism.
