  • Evolutionary Relationships: Animals & Fungi - A Close Look
The two groups that are closely related evolutionarily are animals and fungi.

    Here's why:

    * Shared Ancestor: Animals and fungi share a common ancestor that lived over a billion years ago. This ancestor was a single-celled organism that likely resembled modern protists.

    * Similar Cell Structure: Both animals and fungi are heterotrophic, meaning they obtain nutrients by consuming other organisms. They also share similar cell structures, including the presence of chitin in their cell walls (though chitin is more prominent in fungi).

    * Molecular Evidence: Genetic analysis strongly supports the close relationship between animals and fungi.

While plants are also eukaryotes, their evolutionary path diverged much earlier than the animal-fungi lineage.
