  • Origin of the Term 'Biology': Who Coined It First?
The word "biology" wasn't introduced by a single person, but rather emerged gradually. It's believed to have been coined independently by two different individuals in the late 18th century:

    * Gottfried Reinhold Treviranus (1776-1837), a German physician and naturalist, used the term "Biologie" in his book "Biologie oder Philosophie der lebenden Natur" (Biology, or Philosophy of Living Nature) published in 1802.

    * Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829), a French naturalist, used the term "biologie" in his book "Hydrogéologie" published in 1802.

So, while both Treviranus and Lamarck are credited with independently introducing the term, it was Treviranus who used it in a more comprehensive way, defining it as the study of living organisms.
