  • White Blood Cells: Your Body's Defense System Explained
The blood cell that primarily protects the body is the white blood cell, also known as a leukocyte.

    Here's why:

    * Immune System Warriors: White blood cells are the core of your immune system. They identify and destroy harmful invaders like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.

    * Different Types, Different Jobs: There are several types of white blood cells, each with a specific role:

    * Neutrophils: The most abundant type, they engulf and destroy bacteria.

    * Lymphocytes: Include B cells (produce antibodies) and T cells (kill infected cells and regulate the immune response).

    * Monocytes: Transform into macrophages, which engulf larger particles and debris.

    * Eosinophils: Fight parasites and allergic reactions.

    * Basophils: Release histamine, involved in inflammation.

While red blood cells carry oxygen and platelets help with clotting, they are not directly involved in fighting off infections like white blood cells.
