  • Mitochondria: Understanding Their Origins and Classification
Mitochondria do not belong to a phylum. Phyla are taxonomic classifications used for multicellular organisms.

Mitochondria are organelles, which are subcellular structures found within eukaryotic cells. They have their own DNA and are thought to have originated from endosymbiosis, where a free-living bacterium was engulfed by a larger cell and became a permanent resident.

Therefore, while mitochondria are thought to have descended from a bacterial ancestor, they are not classified as a phylum or any other taxonomic rank.
