  • Aristotle: Pioneer of Biological Classification - History & Contributions
The person who first developed a somewhat crude method of classification for organisms was Aristotle.

While his system wasn't as sophisticated as modern taxonomy, he was the first to attempt a systematic categorization of living things. He divided organisms into two main groups: plants and animals. He further categorized them based on their physical characteristics, such as their habitat, mode of locomotion, and reproductive strategies.

While Aristotle's classification system was based on observable traits, it was limited by his lack of understanding of evolutionary relationships and the vast diversity of life. His work, however, laid the foundation for future scientific investigations and helped to shape the development of modern taxonomy.
