  • Understanding Skeletal Cartilage: Types, Functions & Locations
The three main types of skeletal cartilage are:

    1. Hyaline cartilage: This is the most abundant type, found in areas like the nose, trachea, ribs, and articular surfaces of bones. It is characterized by its glassy, smooth appearance and provides flexibility, support, and low-friction surfaces for joints.

    2. Elastic cartilage: This type contains more elastic fibers than hyaline cartilage, giving it greater flexibility and resilience. It is found in structures like the ears and epiglottis.

    3. Fibrocartilage: This is the strongest type of cartilage, containing thick collagen fibers, providing tensile strength and shock absorption. It is found in the intervertebral discs and menisci of the knee.
