  • The Origin of Mammalia: Understanding Mammary Glands
The class Mammalia is named for the mammary glands, which are the defining feature of mammals.

While both male and female mammals have mammary glands, only females produce milk to nourish their offspring. This unique characteristic is what sets mammals apart from other vertebrate groups and gives them their name.
