  • Cell Junctions: Types, Functions, and Importance in Biology
The plasma membranes of two adjacent cells come in contact at special sites called cell junctions.

There are several types of cell junctions, each with a specific function:

    * Tight junctions: Prevent leakage of fluids and solutes between cells.

    * Desmosomes: Provide strong adhesion between cells, acting like "spot welds" to hold them together.

    * Gap junctions: Allow for communication between cells through the passage of ions and small molecules.

These cell junctions are crucial for maintaining the integrity and function of tissues and organs.
