  • Taste Cells: Understanding the Role of Microvilli in Taste Perception
The sensitive part of a taste cell is the microvilli, also known as taste hairs or gustatory hairs.

    Here's why:

    * Microvilli are tiny, finger-like projections that extend from the apical (top) surface of the taste cell.

    * They increase the surface area of the cell and are the primary site of interaction with food molecules.

    * Taste receptors are located on the surface of the microvilli. These receptors bind to specific chemicals in food, triggering a signal that travels to the brain and is interpreted as a taste.

Essentially, the microvilli are like tiny antennas that pick up chemical signals from food and send them to the taste cell, initiating the process of taste perception.
