  • Understanding Concentration Gradients: Cell Biology Explained
When the concentration of a substance is higher outside of a cell than inside, it's called a concentration gradient. This gradient represents a potential for movement of the substance from the area of higher concentration to the area of lower concentration, in an attempt to reach equilibrium.

This process is driven by diffusion, which is the passive movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
