  • Plankton-Based Foods: How Tiny Organisms Impact Your Diet
You might be surprised to learn that we eat plankton indirectly all the time! Plankton are the foundation of the marine food web. Here's how:

    * Fish: Most fish, especially those we eat like tuna, salmon, and cod, feed on smaller fish and other marine life that in turn feed on plankton.

    * Shellfish: Clams, mussels, oysters, and shrimp all filter plankton from the water.

    * Krill: These tiny crustaceans are a major food source for many larger animals, including whales, and they themselves primarily eat phytoplankton.

So, while you won't find plankton on your dinner plate, you are indirectly consuming them whenever you eat seafood.

Fun fact: Some cultures directly consume krill, particularly in parts of Asia.
