  • Antimicrobials: Understanding Antibiotics, Antifungals & Antivirals
Medicines that fight microbes are called antimicrobials. There are two main categories:

    1. Antibiotics: These specifically target and kill bacteria.

    * Examples: Penicillin, Amoxicillin, Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin

    2. Antifungal agents: These target and kill fungi.

    * Examples: Fluconazole, Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, Nystatin

    3. Antiviral agents: These target and inhibit the replication of viruses.

    * Examples: Tamiflu (for influenza), Acyclovir (for herpes), HIV antiretroviral drugs

    4. Antiparasitic drugs: These target and kill parasites.

    * Examples: Metronidazole (for giardia and other intestinal parasites), Malarone (for malaria)

    Important Notes:

    * Antimicrobial resistance: Overuse and misuse of antibiotics can lead to antimicrobial resistance, where microbes become resistant to the drugs designed to kill them. This is a major public health concern.

    * Antimicrobial stewardship: It's crucial to only use antimicrobials when necessary and to use them correctly. This helps to prevent resistance and maintain the effectiveness of these life-saving medicines.

    * Not all microbes are bad: Many microbes are essential for human health, and using antimicrobials unnecessarily can disrupt the healthy balance of our microbiome.

If you suspect you have an infection, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
