  • Understanding Atomic Nucleus Composition: Protons & Neutrons
The nucleus of an atom contains two types of particles:

    * Protons: These particles have a positive (+) charge and contribute to the atom's atomic number.

    * Neutrons: These particles have no charge (they are neutral) and contribute to the atom's atomic mass.

Together, protons and neutrons make up nearly all the mass of an atom.
