  • Lysosomes: The Cell's Digestive Powerhouse - Function & Role
    The cell organelle responsible for intracellular digestion is the lysosome.

    Here's why:

    * Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles that contain a variety of hydrolytic enzymes, which are powerful enzymes capable of breaking down various biological molecules.

    * They act as the "recycling center" of the cell. They engulf and digest:

    * Worn-out or damaged organelles

    * Cellular debris

    * Engulfed bacteria and viruses

    * Lysosomes also play a role in autophagy, which is the process of breaking down and recycling cellular components.

    While other organelles like peroxisomes and proteasomes also participate in cellular digestion, lysosomes are considered the primary site for intracellular digestion.
