  • Cellular Respiration: Location and Process Explained
Cellular respiration occurs in different parts of the cell:

    * Glycolysis: This initial step occurs in the cytoplasm.

    * Krebs Cycle (Citric Acid Cycle): This stage takes place in the mitochondrial matrix, the innermost compartment of the mitochondria.

    * Electron Transport Chain: This final stage occurs in the inner mitochondrial membrane, the membrane that encloses the mitochondrial matrix.

So, while some parts of cellular respiration take place in the cytoplasm, the majority of the process happens within the mitochondria, specifically in its matrix and inner membrane.
