  • Cell Growth & Development: How Cells Make You Grow
Your body grows because cells do three main things:

    1. Divide: Cells create copies of themselves, increasing the total number of cells in your body. This is called mitosis.

    2. Grow: Cells increase in size. This happens as they produce more components like proteins and organelles.

    3. Differentiate: Cells specialize to perform specific functions. For example, some cells become muscle cells, while others become nerve cells.

Here's a simple analogy: Imagine a Lego set. You can build a bigger, more complex structure by:

    * Adding more Lego bricks: This is like cells dividing.

    * Building bigger structures with the same number of bricks: This is like cells growing.

    * Using different types of bricks to create different structures: This is like cells differentiating.

This combined process of cell division, growth, and differentiation allows your body to grow from a single fertilized egg to a complex organism.
