    Cell membranes are characterized by the presence of:

    * Phospholipids: These are the primary building blocks of the cell membrane. They form a bilayer, with their hydrophilic (water-loving) heads facing the watery environments inside and outside the cell, and their hydrophobic (water-fearing) tails facing each other in the middle of the membrane.

    * Proteins: These are embedded within the phospholipid bilayer, serving various functions:

    * Integral proteins: Extend through the membrane and act as channels, transporters, receptors, and enzymes.

    * Peripheral proteins: Attach to the surface of the membrane and play roles in cell signaling, anchoring, and enzymatic activity.

    * Cholesterol: This lipid molecule is embedded within the phospholipid bilayer, contributing to membrane fluidity and stability.

    * Carbohydrates: These are attached to lipids (glycolipids) or proteins (glycoproteins) on the outer surface of the membrane, playing roles in cell recognition, adhesion, and signaling.

    Therefore, the presence of phospholipids, proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates are the key characteristics of cell membranes.
