  • White Blood Cells: Your Body's Germ-Fighting Defenders
The blood cells that destroy germs in the body are called white blood cells or leukocytes.

Within the group of white blood cells, there are different types, each with a specific role in fighting off infections:

    * Neutrophils: These are the most common type of white blood cell and are the first responders to infection. They engulf and destroy bacteria and fungi.

    * Macrophages: These are larger cells that also engulf and destroy microbes, as well as cellular debris. They also play a role in activating other immune cells.

    * Lymphocytes: These are responsible for the adaptive immune response, meaning they recognize specific pathogens and mount a targeted attack. There are two main types of lymphocytes:

    * T cells: These cells directly attack infected cells and help regulate other immune cells.

    * B cells: These cells produce antibodies, which bind to pathogens and mark them for destruction.

So, while all white blood cells are involved in fighting off germs, specific types are responsible for different aspects of the immune response.
