  • Gamete DNA Contribution: How Sperm & Egg Combine Genetic Material
The male and female gametes each contribute DNA material during fertilization. This is the process where the sperm (male gamete) fuses with the egg (female gamete).

    Here's a breakdown:

    * Sperm: Carries half of the father's genetic material (23 chromosomes) in its nucleus.

    * Egg: Carries half of the mother's genetic material (23 chromosomes) in its nucleus.

    * Fertilization: When the sperm penetrates the egg, their nuclei fuse, combining the 23 chromosomes from the sperm and the 23 chromosomes from the egg to create a complete set of 46 chromosomes in the zygote (the first cell of the developing organism).

This fusion of genetic material from both parents creates a unique combination of DNA, leading to the genetic diversity of offspring.
