  • Understanding the Eukaryotic Cell Cycle: Phases and Stages
There are two main phases in the eukaryotic cell cycle:

    1. Interphase: This is the longest phase, where the cell grows, copies its DNA, and prepares for division. Interphase is further divided into three subphases:

    * G1 phase: The cell grows and synthesizes proteins.

    * S phase: The cell replicates its DNA.

    * G2 phase: The cell continues to grow and produces proteins necessary for cell division.

    2. M phase (Mitotic Phase): This is the phase where the cell actually divides. M phase is further divided into two subphases:

    * Mitosis: The nucleus divides, separating the duplicated chromosomes into two new nuclei.

    * Cytokinesis: The cytoplasm divides, forming two new daughter cells.

Therefore, while there are only two main phases, there are four subphases when considering the subdivisions of interphase and M phase.
