  • Earthworms After Rain: Spontaneous Generation & Scientific Explanation
The theory of spontaneous generation would explain the appearance of earthworms on the sidewalk after a rainstorm by claiming that they arose from the non-living matter of the wet pavement.

Here's how the theory would explain it:

    * The rain provides the necessary moisture and conditions for life to spontaneously arise.

    * The sidewalk or road, with its mixture of dirt and decaying matter, provides the "building blocks" for the worms to form.

However, this theory is scientifically incorrect. We now know that:

    * Life only comes from pre-existing life. Earthworms don't spontaneously appear from wet pavement; they emerge from the soil where they live.

    * The rain simply brings them to the surface. The worms, already present in the ground, are driven out of their burrows by the water saturation.

The theory of spontaneous generation was popular for centuries, but it was ultimately disproven by experiments like those of Louis Pasteur.
