  • Carl Linnaeus and Binomial Nomenclature: The Number of Names He Created
Carl Linnaeus developed the system of binomial nomenclature, which gives each organism two names.

    * The first name is the genus to which the organism belongs.

    * The second name is the species name.

For example, the scientific name for humans is *Homo sapiens*. *Homo* is the genus, and *sapiens* is the species.
