  • Human Gametes: Types and Chromosome Numbers - A Quick Guide
    The two human gametes are:

    * Sperm: A male gamete with 23 chromosomes.

    * Egg (or ovum): A female gamete with 23 chromosomes.

Each gamete contains half the number of chromosomes found in a normal human cell (46 chromosomes). This is because when the sperm and egg fuse during fertilization, they combine to form a zygote with the full complement of 46 chromosomes.
