Most animals produce carbon dioxide as a waste product of cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is the process by which animals convert glucose into energy. During this process, oxygen is used to break down glucose, and carbon dioxide is released as a byproduct. Animals also produce carbon dioxide when they breathe out. When they inhale, they take in oxygen from the air. When they exhale, they release carbon dioxide into the air.
