The spongy mesophyll is a layer of loosely packed parenchyma cells located between the upper and lower epidermis of a leaf. These cells contain chloroplasts and are responsible for photosynthesis. The spongy mesophyll also contains large intercellular air spaces that allow for the exchange of gases between the leaf and the atmosphere.
