Psyllid vectors are tiny, sap-sucking insects that can transmit plant diseases by transmitting bacteria in their saliva while feeding. These diseases infect the xylem, the primary water-transporting tissue of plants, and cause symptoms like wilting, yellowing of leaves, and even plant death. Among the several plant pathogens vectored by psyllids, one such infamous bacterium is Candidatus Liberibacter spp., which causes diseases such as Huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening in citrus trees. HLB is a severe and incurable threat to citrus industries worldwide, and psyllid vectors, particularly the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, play a pivotal role in its transmission.
