  • Heterotrophs: Understanding Organisms That Consume Food
Heterotrophs are living things that must ingest or absorb their food. They cannot make their own food from inorganic matter. Heterotrophs include animals, fungi, and some plants.

    * Animals are all heterotrophs. They must eat other living things to get the energy and nutrients they need to survive. Animals can be predators, herbivores, or decomposers.

    * Fungi are a type of heterotroph that cannot move. They absorb nutrients from their surroundings. Fungi can be found in soil, water, and on plants and animals.

    * Some plants are heterotrophs. They cannot make their own food from sunlight and carbon dioxide. Instead, they must absorb nutrients from their surroundings. Heterotrophic plants include Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, and sundews.
