The cells that can build a bony matrix are called osteoblasts. Osteoblasts are specialized cells that are responsible for the formation of new bone tissue. They secrete a matrix of proteins and minerals that hardens into bone. Osteoblasts are found in the inner layer of the periosteum, the membrane that covers the surface of bones, and in the endosteum, the membrane that lines the inner surface of bones.
