  • Flatworm Diseases: Types, Symptoms & Prevention
Flatworms are parasitic worms and can cause several diseases in humans and animals. Some common diseases caused by flatworms include:

    1. Schistosomiasis (Bilharzia): Caused by blood flukes (Schistosoma species). It is characterized by fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and blood in stool or urine.

    2. Fascioliasis: Caused by the liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica). It can lead to inflammation and damage to the liver, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, and fatigue.

    3. Taeniasis and Cysticercosis: Taeniasis is caused by adult tapeworms (Taenia species) living in the intestine. Cysticercosis is caused by the larval stage of pork or beef tapeworms (Taenia solium or Taenia saginata) developing in various tissues of the body, commonly the brain and muscles. Symptoms may include abdominal discomfort, weight loss, and neurological issues in severe cases of cysticercosis.

    4. Clonorchis sinensis Infection: Caused by the Chinese liver fluke. It can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and enlargement of the liver.

    5. Opisthorchis viverrini Infection: Caused by the Southeast Asian liver fluke. It can lead to similar symptoms as Clonorchis sinensis infection, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and liver damage.

    6. Paragonimiasis: Caused by the lung fluke (Paragonimus westermani). It affects the lungs and can result in coughing, chest pain, and occasionally, neurological symptoms if the parasite reaches the brain.

    7. Diphyllobothriasis: Caused by fish tapeworms (Diphyllobothrium species). It often doesn't cause significant symptoms, but can sometimes lead to vitamin B12 deficiency and related complications such as anemia and neurological issues.

These are some examples of diseases caused by flatworms. The actual number of diseases may vary depending on the specific classification and grouping of parasitic diseases.
