  • Phloem Function: Transport of Sugars and Nutrients in Plants
    Transport of Organic Compounds and Nutrients: Phloem tissue is primarily responsible for the transport of organic compounds, especially sucrose and other sugars, from the photosynthetic parts of the plant (usually the leaves) to the rest of the plant, where they are needed for growth and metabolism. Additionally, phloem also transports other nutrients, such as amino acids, hormones, and minerals.

    Distribution of Resources: The organic compounds and nutrients transported through the phloem play a crucial role in distributing resources within the plant. For example, during the spring season when new growth occurs, phloem transports the necessary resources to support the development of new shoots, leaves, and flowers.

    Storage and Mobilization of Reserves: Phloem tissue can also serve as a storage site for carbohydrates in the form of starch. When needed, these stored carbohydrates can be converted back into sugars and transported to other plant parts during periods of high energy demand.
