  • Gametes: Understanding Sex Cells and Reproduction
The scientific term for a sex cell is a gamete. Gametes are specialized cells that are involved in sexual reproduction and contain half the genetic material of a whole cell. In humans, gametes are produced by the gonads, which are the testes in males and the ovaries in females. The male gamete is called a sperm cell and the female gamete is an egg cell or ovum.
