Red Bone Marrow vs. Spongy Bone: Where Red Blood Cells Are Made
Spongy bone does not produce red blood cells. It is red bone marrow that produces red blood cells. While spongy bone does contain some red bone marrow, it is primarily yellow bone marrow. Red bone marrow is primarily found in flat bones, such as the sternum, pelvis, and skull, and in the spongy bone of the vertebrae.
