  • Mitochondria in Animal Cells: Number & Function
The number of mitochondria in an animal cell can vary greatly depending on the cell type and its energy requirements. On average, a single animal cell can contain anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand mitochondria. For example, liver cells, which are responsible for a variety of metabolic functions, can have up to 2,000 mitochondria, while muscle cells, which require a lot of energy for contraction, can have several thousand mitochondria.
