RNA polymerase is the enzyme that transcribes DNA into mRNA. It performs the initial unwinding of the DNA double helix as well as subsequent polymerization and proofreading functions. There are three classes of RNA polymerase in bacteria and viruses and in eukaryotic nuclei.
