  • Understanding Earth's Biomes: A Comprehensive Guide to 11 Major Types
There are actually more than 6 biomes - climate scientists currently estimate there are 11 major biomes. Each biome is characterized by its climate, vegetation, and animal life. The six major biomes are:

    1. Tropical rainforest

    * Location: Near the equator

    * Climate: Warm and humid, with average temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius (77 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit)

    * Vegetation: Lush vegetation, including tall trees, lianas, and epiphytes

    * Animals: Monkeys, sloths, birds, insects, and reptiles

    2. Temperate deciduous forest

    * Location: Between the tropics and the polar regions

    * Climate: Moderate, with warm summers and cold winters

    * Vegetation: Trees that lose their leaves in the fall, shrubs, and wildflowers

    * Animals: Deer, squirrels, rabbits, birds, and insects

    3. Temperate grassland

    * Location: Between the temperate deciduous forest and the desert

    * Climate: Semi-arid, with hot summers and cold winters

    * Vegetation: Grasses, sedges, and wildflowers

    * Animals: Bison, pronghorn, wolves, coyotes, and birds

    4. Desert

    * Location: In the subtropics and tropics

    * Climate: Hot and dry, with average temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit)

    * Vegetation: Cacti, succulents, and shrubs

    * Animals: Snakes, lizards, scorpions, birds, and rodents

    5. Mediterranean

    * Location: Around the Mediterranean Sea and in parts of California, Chile, and Australia

    * Climate: Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters

    * Vegetation: Chaparral, evergreen trees, and shrubs

    * Animals: Birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians

    6. Tundra

    * Location: In the Arctic and Antarctic regions

    * Climate: Cold and dry, with average temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit)

    * Vegetation: Mosses, lichens, and low-growing shrubs

    * Animals: Polar bears, seals, walruses, reindeer, and birds
