  • Understanding the Cell Membrane: Structure & Function
Cell membranes surround all cells and separate their interiors from the external environment. This membrane separates the external environment (known as the extracellular space) from the internal compartments of the cell. Therefore, the cell membrane surrounds the contents of the cell, separating them from the outside world. In the human body, cell membranes help to maintain the appropriate concentration of various electrolytes and molecules for different types of cells to function propertly.
