In order for a recessive trait to show up, an organism must inherit two copies of the recessive allele. This is because recessive alleles are not expressed unless they are homozygous, meaning that both copies of the gene are the same. If an organism inherits one copy of a dominant allele and one copy of a recessive allele, the dominant allele will be expressed and the recessive allele will be hidden, or masked.
