  • Biogenesis: Understanding the Origin of Life – Definition & History
The correct term that describes the theory that life comes from life is biogenesis.

The concept of biogenesis dates back to the ancient Greek philosophers, who proposed that living organisms arise from non-living matter. This idea was widely held until the 17th century when experiments conducted by Francesco Redi and others challenged the prevailing theory.

In his experiment, Redi used sealed and unsealed containers of meat to demonstrate that maggots only appeared in the unsealed containers where flies could enter. This observation supported the idea that maggots developed from fly eggs, rather than spontaneously generating from the decaying meat.

Further experiments in the 19th century by scientists like Louis Pasteur and John Tyndall provided additional evidence in favor of biogenesis, eventually disproving the theory of spontaneous generation.
